Sometimes you get an amp with a good soul and bad bones. This Gibson GA-5W from the 1970s used to live in a boring and beat up black MDF shell. It was the opposite of inspiring. So we asked our good friend Sam Hill to work his magic and rehouse it. With its brand new housing and an upgraded speaker, this little amp is finally singing again. It's just begging to be a studio's secret weapon.
The amp itself is solid state and from the Norlin factory. It's 15 watts and has a new Celestion G12T-75 speaker. The cabinet is made with Baltic Birch, which Sam swears by. Here's a little bit from his website:
The type of material, and thickness of material, can have a huge effect on the final sound and tone of a speaker cabinet. For this reason, I have chosen to use Baltic Birch plywood in most of my cabinet builds. Its uniform plies, thicker face veneers and stringent production process means that it is virtually free of voids and goes toward creating a product that is stronger, more reliable and far more consistent than regular plywood. These attributes also allow Baltic Birch plywood to have a warmth that is missing in manufactured materials such as particle board or MDF, whilst maintaining a repeatable consistency that is absent in (especially new growth) solid woods.
