Types of Hi-Hats

A number of factors can affect the tone and response of a pair of hi-hats, but these three are the biggest considerations to keep in mind:

  • Size: The standard size of a hi-hat is 14", which offers a time-tested combination of just enough presence with just enough bite. For a sharper sound with less body, you can go down to 13" or even 12" hats, or for big, groove-ready response, go up to 15" or 16" models.
  • Weight: Heavier cymbals will offer more volume and projection while lighter cymbals offer more nuanced articulation and wash. Hi-hat weight can be largely dictated by genre, but it's all about finding your own sound.
  • Hammering: There are two types of hammering: hand and machine. The former is found in examples like the Zildjian K series and, as the name implies, is done by hand, resulting in a cymbal with a lower fundamental frequency. Machine hammering is done with pinpoint precision and results in sharper cymbals with higher fundamental frequencies.
