Fretless fans, we have a fantastic find for you - straight out of 1982, it's this G&L L-2000 Series E.  No lines on the board, tons of tone, and a great look.  That's what you get with his highly coveted, early-era masterpiece from G&L Musical Instruments.  It's in Cherry Red (often referred to as Translucent Red or Ruby Red by collectors) and still in great shape.  Representing Leo Fender’s final revolution in electric bass design, the "Series E" designation indicates that the bass features an active preamp system built by CLF Research.  This early 1980s model is widely praised for its exceptional versatility, heavy-duty hardware, and massive output.

Made in Fullerton CA, this fretless bass was built with a heavy, highly resonant ash body, and features an early-style maple neck topped with an Ebony fretboard.   It has the early "hook" headstock design characteristic of first-generation G&L instruments, rather than the rounded contours used on modern Tribute or USA models.  Players and collectors gravitate to this style, and some say it's the best bass design Leo Fender came up with.  That's quite the statement but after playing one of these basses from this era, we can see why it's been said.

The Series E is famous for its powerful, aggressive tone, driven by Leo Fender’s patented Magnetic Field Design (MFD) humbuckers and a complex, highly functional control layout.  You get two massive MFD Humbucking pickups with individually adjustable pole pieces, plus 3 knobs (Master Volume, Treble Cut, and Bass Cut).  There are multiple switches, for the following:

  1. Switch 1 (3-Way): Pickup selector (Neck, Both, Bridge).

  2. Switch 2 (2-Way): Series/Parallel selector, which changes the internal wiring of individual pickup coils for varying punch and midrange density.

  3. Switch 3 (3-Way Preamp): Passive / Active / Active with Treble Boost

This gives a wide variety of tones to be sculpted to your preference, making this an extremely versatile bass.

It came to us from the original owner, who has kept it clean for all of these years.  It's in great shape, with a bit of honest player wear but nothing major.  The original hardshell case is included.  Setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop, it's ready roll smoothly onto the next stage or into the next studio session.
