Martin / 1939 D-28 "Herringbone"

The pre-war D-28 stands as the ultimate masterpiece in acoustic guitar history, and we've brought in an example from 1939, right in the middle of that era's dramatic spec evolution.

This is the quintessential acoustic guitar - the "Herringbone D-28" that every guitarist dreams of - showcasing that legendary appeal to the fullest.

The top uses tightly grained Adirondack spruce; the grain alone tells you this is something special. The back and sides use gorgeous Brazilian rosewood with deep, beautiful grain, letting you feel firsthand the overwhelming quality of pre-war materials. The traditional ivoroid binding combined with herringbone trim gives this era a special elegance and aura all its own.

The headstock carries the original, rare shielded-back Grover G111 tuners - their classic look and the character that only aged metal parts can bring make the vintage quality even more apparent. The original tortoiseshell-pattern pickguard, beautifully aged into the body over time, also remains intact.

The biggest highlight of this 1939 example is its transitional-era spec: a substantial 45mm nut width, from just before the shift to about 43mm partway through 1939 - one of the very last examples with this comfortable, powerful pre-war neck feel. Internally, it uses the "rear-shifted scalloped X-bracing" that had only just been introduced the previous year - compared to the forward-shifted bracing, this increases strength near the bridge while changing how the top resonates: forward-shifted bracing concentrates power near the soundhole, while rear-shifted bracing lets vibration spread evenly across the whole top, all while retaining power and fullness. A truly seasoned tone that has to be experienced.

Strumming it, you'll find yourself saying "so this is what a herringbone Brazilian-rosewood D-28 sounds like" - the overwhelming volume speaks for itself. The deep, ground-hugging low end from the Adirondack/Brazilian-rosewood combination merges perfectly with the straight, focused rear-shift tone, responding directly to the player's touch. Rich in overtones yet remarkably clear note-to-note, it's utterly convincing the moment you strum a chord. Please experience for yourself this supreme D-28, embodying acoustic guitar history itself.
