Vintage 1950's Electro-Voice 630 Omnidirectional Dynamic Microphone w Astatic E6G desk stand prop display
Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a classic older general purpose microphone made by Electro Voice in the 1950's. This is the earlier 2nd generation 630 that has the polished chrome housing and looks absolutely gorgeous but it no longer works and should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only. It comes with the period Astatic E6G model stand shown however in which to display.
Pic # 2 shows this very model in an old E.V catalog I have showing the mics basic characteristics.
Pic # 3 shows Jerry Lee Lewis using one of these very mics. Probably used an E.V 630 singing Great balls of Fire at some point in his career.
This mic was typically used for dispatch and broadcasting purposes but was even used for singing for live events as seen in pic # 3. The photo is of Jerry Lee Lewis.
The mic housing / head is reminiscent of the jet engines being used by several American and Soviet fight planes of the 1940's and 50's. The look was very popular but by the 1960's the look was dated and just not as popular as the earlier models were.
Despite the non-working status of this mic it is 100% complete inside and out.
The 70 + year old microphone has almost no wear as you can see in pictures and one of the finest examples I have ever personally seen. The threads for the cable and stand are perfect with zero stripping. The E.V label looks excellent and completely legible. Overall this piece is an easy 9 + on a scale of 1 - 10.
The joint mechanism works fine with plenty of tension. The on / off switch works great as well. Just needs a replacement element.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...
The mic comes with a period 1940's /50's era Astatic brand E6G desk stand.
This model was a detachable desk stand that has a painted aluminum base with detachable painted wooden handle allowing the user of the mic to quickly release the mic attached and walk around using the handle to support the mic with the twist of the handle.
This design was very practical for it's time as very few people actually held those older mics in their hand. It was considered taboo so the mic stand handle was a more civilized and practical option.
The stands wooden riser seats on the base via a small hole where the riser sits. There is plenty of tension once applied. Easy to remove once twisted half way and lifted upwards.
Often the top of the wood handle is stripped out from years of use making it hard for any mic to screw onto the handle but this handle is in excellent shape.
The top wooden riser has the black painted finish and looks very nice while the bottom painted aluminum base is Kona Brown and shows the same amount of wear but there is a small paint chip. Please let the detailed pics be your guide. The stand has the 3 original rubber pads and they are in excellent shape. Stand is appx 6 inches tall X 5 inches wide. With mic on top it's appx 11 1/2 inches tall.
Mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have if you don't like the desk stand provided.
This will make a great display piece anywhere it sits in the home, studio or office.
