Univox Super Fuzz - 1968/69 ** Newly Serviced**
1968-69 Univox Super Fuzz **Serviced-with video**
I recently picked up a couple of vintage fuzz pedals to restore from the same seller: a Mica-Tone Deluxe Fuzz and this early Univox Super-Fuzz.
This Univox came to me non-functioning and in rough cosmetic condition, but with some careful work and attention to detail, it is now looking great and sounding fantastic. After replacing the faulty electrolytic capacitors, the pedal came back to life and delivers the classic Super-Fuzz tone these pedals are known for.
This example is especially interesting because, unlike the more common Univox Super-Fuzz circuit that typically uses 10µF capacitors, this one has a mix of 30µF and 10µF capacitors.
I also spent a lot of time on the cosmetic restoration, doing my best to improve its appearance while preserving its original vintage character. When I received it, the badge was detached and the enclosure had some surface rust. I carefully cleaned the pedal, reduced the rust as much as possible, and then sprayed the exterior with flat clear lacquer to help protect the exposed metal and fragile original paint.
I’m very pleased with how this restoration turned out. It is a great-sounding vintage fuzz and a satisfying save of a classic piece of gear. Additional photos of the restoration process are available on my site and the original capacitors will be included with the pedal in a bag.
