The Microtech Gefell MT 71 S is a large-diaphragm cardioid studio condenser microphone built around Gefell's legendary M7 capsule, here in an understated Black Matte finish. The MT 71 S condenser microphone, equipped with Gefell's proven large diameter membrane capsule, features outstanding performance, high sensitivity and an improved signal-to-noise ratio. The MT 71 S guarantees a particularly clean and colourless sound reproduction. It is the single-pattern cardioid sibling of the UMT 70S, drawing on Gefell's heritage as the original home of the Neumann lineage in Gefell, Germany — making it ideal for instrumental and vocal soloists in recording studios, radio, and TV broadcasting.

Key elements of its design:

• Legendary M7 Capsule The pressure gradient transducer is a dual capacitor design using a single brass back plate and two large diameter gold plated plastic membranes. This famous capsule is at the heart of the microphone's smooth, large, tube-like character.
• Signature "Presence" The cardioid pattern exhibits a smooth treble boost rising which peaks at about 4 dB in the range of 7 kHz. This response coupled with a slight roll-off at low frequencies is what gives the microphone its legendary 'presence'.
• Transformerless Circuit Design The newly developed transformerless circuit design substitutes the previous transformer by a symmetrical output stage yielding superb transient response combined with high RFI rejection. The circuitry also achieves wider dynamic range by lowering the self noise floor and increasing the headroom for loud signals.
• Pad & Bass Roll-Off A 10 dB attenuator is installed to reduce the sensitivity of the microphone when placed near extremely loud sound sources, and a low frequency roll-off switch will reduce the proximity effect when close miking.
• Side-Address Design The direction of maximum sensitivity is radial to the grill, i.e. side addressed, despite its resemblance to handheld microphones.
• Standard Phantom Powering The MT 71 S uses 48 volt phantom powering according to the international standards DIN 45596 and IEC 268-15, with a gold-plated 3-pin XLR output connector.

The MT 71 S has a devoted following among engineers. One Vintage King reviewer noted it sounds more like some tube mics than a transformerless condenser, with the words "large and smooth" springing to mind first, and that the M7 capsule has a very unique quality — making it an ideal ticket for taming harsh or sibilant voices.
