Gibson Victory II MV-2 1982 - Candy Apple Red
Gibson Victory II MV-2 Candy Apple Red 1982 - 4.42kg
The Gibson "Victory" series was manufactured and sold for a short period from 1981 to January 1984. Developed by the R&D team in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the body design was by Chuck Burge and the electronic circuitry by Tim Shaw. Initially manufactured at the Kalamazoo factory, production was moved to the Nashville factory by the end of 1981.
At the time, Gibson aimed to create guitars that could produce a wider range of tones while maintaining the traditional humbucker sound, in order to capture a broader market. The "Victory II MV-2" was created for players who prioritize Telecaster-style sounds, country, and clean tones. It features a 42.86mm nut width, 24.75-inch scale length, set neck, solid body and 3-piece maple neck, Gibson Deluxe chrome tuners, a 12-inch fingerboard radius, offset round position markers, and 0.040-inch thick white binding on the neck. The headstock design is "Firebird"-like, but is actually smaller and angled at 14 degrees to increase string tension at the nut.
MV stands for "Multi-Voice," representing the wide range of tonal variations this series offers. It incorporates numerous innovations not seen in previous Gibson guitars, with a futuristic body shape that is significantly different from conventional models, an asymmetrical archtop design, a newly designed top-adjustable "Tune-O-Matic" bridge, replaceable nylon or brass inserts, and specially designed "Velvet Brick / Magna II" pickups being its main features. Controls include a master volume and master tone, a 3-way selector, and a 2-position coil-tap selector, allowing switching between humbucker and single-coil sounds.
The unique shape, reminiscent of Knaggs and ESP, shows Gibson's dedication to innovation back in the 80s. Really, the only thing that gives this guitar a Gibson feel is the absence of a tremolo arm. Even in single-coil mode, it doesn't sound like a Fender at all. The neck is quite thin, making it easy to play. On the other hand, the body is thick and heavy. Also, despite the arched body, the higher positions are a bit difficult to play, just like a Les Paul.
We wonder why Gibson thought this look and specification would be popular with country players. It has a rather unique and interesting sound, and it's a model that strangely grows on you. It's a guitar that deserves to be loved more. Known as an unusual presence in history, it's a masterpiece that is being re-evaluated by collectors.
