David "José" Rubio stands out as one of the most renowned English guitar makers. After relocating to Sevilla and later Madrid to study flamenco guitar, he developed a profound passion for luthiery. In 1963, he established his first workshop in New York, USA. Shortly after, he met Julian Bream, marking the beginning of a lasting friendship. Bream played several of Rubio’s guitars, including one very similar to this instrument: a 1966 model featured on his album "Julian Bream and his Friends" (1968). In 1967, D. J. Rubio returned to England, where he lived in Julian Bream’s home in Semley until 1969, when he opened a workshop near Oxford. His work extended beyond guitars to include lutes (played by Bream), vihuelas, theorboes, harpsichords, violas da gamba, baroque guitars, and more. He later moved his workshop to Cambridge in the 1980s.
