This ultra-rare guitar is an absolute unicorn:
A striking Cellophane Red DiMarzio super-Strat, created specifically by DiMarzio for Guitar for the Practicing Musician as the cover guitar for the magazine’s 3rd-anniversary issue in 1986.
Unlike the vast majority of DiMarzio associated instruments —which are parts builds— this example was factory assembled and built by DiMarzio in Staten Island, New York. Making it the only fully DiMarzio-built guitar of this type I am aware of.
Beyond its provenance, the guitar features a number of standout, period-correct details:
- Prototype DiMarzio pickups — noiseless, yet passive (not active)
- Integrated Shockwave booster fattens the sound, think vintage strat to humbucker
- Black DiMarzio tremolo and hardware, reminiscent of Allan Holdsworth-era Charvel designs
- Every component is DiMarzio hardware, throughout
- The neck is like an old 1960s Strat, a perfect C profile
- Incredible fit and finish, consistent with a factory-built showcase instrument
Comes with Hard case and of course, the November 1986 issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician featuring this guitar on the cover !
