The D-28 is Martin's most famous guitar. Since its debut in 1934 as a dreadnought model with a 14th fret joint, similar to the current model, it has remained a beloved world standard to this day. After the original scalloped bracing was discontinued in 1944, the HD-28, a pioneering scalloped bracing model, was reintroduced 32 years later. Based on the timeless D-28, this model exudes a vintage feel and remains a long-selling staple in the lineup today. This instrument is a custom-built 1980 instrument. It features a beautifully tanned spruce top, rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, square rods, ebony fingerboard and bridge, Grover Rotomatic tuning machines, herringbone trim, zigzag back strips, scalloped X bracing, and an original nut. The fingerboard positions were customized from dots to snowflakes, and the pickguard was later replaced with a black one. Based on the D-28 of the time, featuring herringbone trim, a symbol of the prewar era, the name Herringbone Dreadnought comes from the initials. Compared to the D-28 of the time, the scalloped bracing gives it a rich, airy tone. Compared to the current HD-28, the bracing is positioned differently, not forward, resulting in a tighter, more defined sound. The tone is rich and powerful, typical of the 70s, with a rich, well-defined fundamental tone and just the right amount of airiness, producing a full, full sound without being too light or blurry. The slightly sweet, bold tone is emblematic of this period. Of course, the well-balanced sound and unobtrusive handling characteristic of the 28-string guitar remain intact. The nut width is 42.9mm, with a slightly narrow, gentle V-shape. This grip is well-known for its comfortable fit and ease of use, making it suitable for playing with a thumb grip. It's a must-try for anyone who finds the nut width of current models too wide. It features a retrofitted L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup. It features an under-saddle piezo pickup for capturing the core of the sound, and a dual-mic system for capturing the air and brilliance of the body. It allows for pickup, mixing, and output in a format similar to recording. This is an exceptional piece of equipment beloved by musicians of all kinds. While the top of the bridge has been slightly shaved, this allows for more saddle extension, and the string height has been adjusted to a modern height. The dull finish is evidence of the original finish. There are a few small scratches on the bottom of the body top, two slightly larger scratches, and a few light scratches on the back of the neck, but apart from these, the guitar is in excellent condition with little signs of use. Only light scuffs can be seen on the surface of the body, giving it a nearly 40-year shelf life. As mentioned above, the action is comfortable to play, and even the saddles have some wear remaining, providing excellent playability. This guitar is perfect for anyone looking for a unique custom '70s sound, or anyone looking for a classic vintage sound.
