1962 Vox AC-15 1x12 combo, fawn in original mint condition with hang tag
Vox AC15 single 12’s in fawn are rare as few were produced, very few made their way to the USA and even fewer remain in mint condition with original hand tag. According to estimates, up to 1200 AC15s were produced from 1960 -early 1963 (the fawn years) with those 1200 being divided between the single and twin speaker versions.
This JMI Vox AC-15 circa 1962 1 x 12 combo amp is a text book example of Version 9, third circuit as per the fine ref book by Jim Elyea. Vox Amplifiers The JMI Years. This version of AC15 features fawn vinyl, brown Vox grill cloth, copper anodized control panel, square back, single leather handle, Haddon transformers, two brass vents, chicken head knobs, and single 12" Celestion/Vox speaker blue T530 alnico speaker (original cone). The amp has two channels, and one of these channels has "Vibravox." This was an effect that combined tremolo with vibrato which sounds fantastic activated by JMI effect footswitch. No top boost circuit was included, tone was adjusted using the "Cut" control.
The AC15 is the amp that started it all for Vox at the dawn of British rock scene later spawning the classic AC30, which unfortunately could not accommodate the EF 86 valve in its circuit in its most popular iteration the AC30/6. Choosing low noise examples of the wonderful EF 86 valve for the AC30 proved to be too challenging and a compromise was decided upon by Mr Denney with the ubiquitous 12AX7/ECC83. At 47.5 pounds this AC15 single weighs significantly less than an AC30, is not as loud yet all the Vox tone remains in this EF 86 valve equipped compact package . A timeless design that is relevant, even emulated today. This amp has a set of premium NOS (new old stock) tubes, a sympathetic service with updated electrolytic capacitors and a grounded USA style cord. This amp is incredible sounding, a healthy example for the collector and player.
