Complete and fully tested (using a different mouth piece -- have an EW20 in my permanent collection and used the mouth piece from it). My guess is that this instrument was never used prior to my testing based on appearance of the wire ties on the cables (but now they have been unwrapped so I could test them).

  • Yamaha built the EW20 for students using durable plastics. It is small, lightweight and reasonably robust.
  • Besides the keys, it has breath control and a simple modulation lever. The modulation lever does not provide the fine grain control of a pitch wheel due to its mechanical simplicity but it is reliable).
  • It uses the same OPL2 four operator FM chip used in Yamaha's professional FM sythesizers in the late 1980's (DX9, TX81Z, and WT11 tone module for the WX11 Wind Controller).
  • Preset tones only on sound module. Onboard storage for very basic performance settings (instrument, transposition, and reverb).
  • I suspect "Wind Jammer" is how the EW20 was branded at retail versus "Electronic Woodwind" for institutional sales (but I could be wrong).
  • Fingering can be setup Saxophone like or Recorder like (see the manual for details).
  • The FM sounds are musical (as one would expect from Yamaha).
  • DIN MIDI in out and thru allow control of any synth and integration with a DAW via a MIDI interface.
  • Stereo out on 1/4" jacks.
  • 1/4" headphone socket
  • Two 1/4" Footswitch jacks with a few programatic options.
  • Integrated 120v power (no wall wart)
  • Compact fitted case makes it easy to carry (and more importantly, store).

Why would you want one? Instead of trying to get a keyboard or drum pad or data to articulate like a human breaths, you can just play in the articulation you want on a simple instrument. Use the internal sounds, connect it to your favorite synth over DIN MIDI (even 303 acid lines), or your favorite plugins via your MIDI interface).

Or just jam out with headphones...As I mentioned, I have one in my permanent collection. Making music with my breath is just plain fun.

Looks minty, sounds FMee, ready for your studio.
