Vintage RARE1953 Shure 315 ribbon microphone w S-36 desk stand & A85C adapter Jerry Lee Lewis 330 333 SM33 display rebuild
Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome.
You are looking at a somewhat rare and desirable early Shure Brothers 315 model Ribbon microphone that was manufactured in Chicago, ILL during 1953. The 315 model was first introduced in 1951 I believe and had a good 20 year run before being discontinued. The 315 only changed design slightly in 1960 with the revamped lower pistol grip but the top head never changed. This beautiful looking microphone comes with the period Shure S-36 model desk stand in which to display as well as the lower A85C on / off adapter.
It should be noted right away that the mic has been both cleaned and tested. The mic has a very faint signal but cannot be used because the signal is so weak. It does work but the signal strength is only about 10%. This mic will need a rebuild. Possibly a new ribbon, motor or both? ENAK based out of New Jersey could get the job done for under $300.00.
Pic # 2 is of an old Shure mic catalog I have showing the 315 and it's basic characteristics. This was an affordable studio microphone that could be used for singing and broadcasting. The mic is omni-directional in nature picking up noise from both the front and rear. It was multi impedance as well with an adjustable switch in the rear of the mic giving you high, medium and low impedance depending on the type of audio gear you were using.
Pic # 3 shows Jerry Lee Lewis using this very model mic while performing live.
This Shure 315 has the satin chrome finish with an all metal construction making the mic quite rugged in nature.
This mic is 100% complete inside and out and is in pretty nice physical condition despite being almost 70 years old.
The finish shows extremely lite wear as seen in the pictures provided. There are no engravings, pitting or deep scratches. Just a subtle dent in the rear screen. The joint mechanism holds strong like it should and can be tightened as needed with a screw driver. The red Shure logo looks great as does the black label and it's completely legible. The impedance switch on the rear works just as it should. This will make a very fine example for a rebuild.
The threading for the stand is perfect as is for the cable.
You'll notice that there is a rare Shure A85C adapter that is mounted between the mic and stand. This A85C was an accessory that one could purchase to activate the mic when needed with the push of a button. Most mics of this era did not come with an on / off switch so this adapter was practical for broadcasting purposes.
While the adapter is 100% complete and looks fantastic it should be noted that it doesn't not work because the exterior lining on the steel wires has mostly come off so it's not properly grounded and will need to be professionally rewired in order to use. Still a very nice accessory.
Also included is a period Shure S-36 model desk stand. This makes a very stable lite weight platform that really pops with the mic. The S-36 is an all aluminum design with a painted finish. The mic with stand is appx 13 inches tall X 5 inches wide X 7 inches deep.
It has all of it's hardware. The 5 original rubber pads are in great condition.
The painted finish shows very lite wear and base is free of any dents or corrosion. Just a few tiny paint chips.
These 315 mics are getting very hard to come by these days and continue to increase in value as the years go by. You'll be hard pressed to find a nicer example.
The 315 takes an older 3 pin screw on cable. Same as the Shure 55 and 55S. No cable is included.
If you want something truly special to rebuild for every day use or just something to display that will draw compliments...the 315 is going to do it's job.
