This 1954 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop is an exceptional player-grade example with a fascinating history, remarkable original finish, and a factory replacement neck completed by Gibson in the 1970s. With its original P-90 pickups, electronics, and beautifully aged Goldtop finish, this guitar retains much of the character that makes early 1950s Les Pauls so desirable.

During the 1970s, the guitar suffered a headstock break and was brought to a local music shop, which sent it back to Gibson for repair. Rather than repairing the original neck, Gibson fabricated an entirely new one-piece mahogany neck, recreating the original construction and restamping the guitar's original serial number. This factory re-neck is a particularly interesting part of the instrument's history, representing a period-correct repair performed by the company that originally built it.

The original Goldtop finish has aged beautifully, displaying extensive lacquer checking and areas of green oxidation throughout the body. These naturally occurring changes give the guitar an unmistakable vintage appearance that simply cannot be replicated. The original P-90 pickups and potentiometers remain intact, delivering the raw, articulate response, midrange growl, and dynamic sensitivity that define an early Les Paul.

When Black Bobbin acquired the guitar, we performed a refret to bring its playability up to modern expectations while preserving its vintage character. We also installed a Music City Bridge Stud Finder, providing improved intonation and performance while retaining the classic wraparound bridge configuration. The original tuners have also been replaced with metal tulip Grover tuners for reliable tuning performance.

The guitar is accompanied by a Gibson Aged Reissue Lifton hardshell case, offering a fitting home for an instrument of this caliber. Its original Lifton case is also included, preserving another important piece of the guitar's history.

With its remarkable original finish, factory Gibson re-neck, original electronics, and thoughtful player-focused upgrades, this 1954 Les Paul Goldtop represents a rare opportunity to own a genuinely historic instrument that is ready to be played and enjoyed.
