Martin 2001 CTM D-28 KOA, a Custom Shop D-28 with Hawaiian koa back and sides.
Koa gives a brighter, more open voice than the typical rosewood D-28: dreadnought volume blended with sweet, sparkling mids and highs, suited to everything from hard strumming to delicate arpeggios. After 25 years of aging, the stiffness typical of new koa is gone, replaced by rich overtones and sustain even with a light strum. The figured, golden koa grain makes for a striking stage guitar.
High-quality Hawaiian koa has become scarce and expensive, making a comparable Custom Shop order very costly today, and well-kept early-2000s examples rarely come to market.
