We’ve just received a “Silhouette Special” that, judging by its serial number, appears to have been manufactured in 2007 with EMG pickups installed.

The history of the Silhouette dates back to the first guitar model released under the Ernie Ball regime at the 1985 NAMM show.

This model features characteristics that would later become hallmarks of Music Man, such as its compact body and a headstock with a 4-to-2 tuning peg configuration.

Building on that legacy, the Silhouette Special debuted in 1995. Unlike the 24-fret Silhouette, it features 22 frets,

resulting in a configuration that feels familiar to players accustomed to traditional styles.

The body is made of alder, and the neck is maple. The compact body, contoured to fit the body,

is paired with a 25.5-inch scale, creating a design that balances playability with the feel of a standard long-scale guitar.

A major feature of this particular instrument is that the pickups have been replaced with EMG models.

It is equipped with the “85” active humbucker in the bridge position and the “SA” active single-coil pickups in the neck and middle positions.

The “85,” which uses Alnico V magnets, is a model characterized by rich mids and a smooth lead tone.

Meanwhile, the “SA”—which also uses Alnico V—combines bright, open highs with rich lows and warm mids; its internal shielding and low-impedance preamp help reduce noise.

The HSS configuration allows you to switch between the powerful, driven sound of a humbucker and the clean, delicate phrasing of a single-coil pickup.

This MOD specification combines the user-friendly design of the Silhouette Special with the unique character of the EMG 85/SA/SA pickups.

There are signs of Leveling on the frets, but there is currently about 1 mm of fretting depth remaining, and the truss rod operates smoothly within its normal adjustment range.

While there are scratches and dents in various areas, there is no significant damage that exposes the wood or severely compromises the appearance.

The pickguard shows yellowing due to aging and a crack near the wheel nut.

The neck also shows discoloration due to aging and marks from a hook.

The tremolo arm is missing, and a non-original soft case is included.
