The Jackson JS34 Dinky Arch Top in Silverburst is an affordable, metal-oriented superstrat-style guitar with a pretty aggressive look and a surprisingly versatile pickup setup.
The JS34 is part of Jackson's JS Series, aimed at delivering Jackson's fast-playing necks and metal-friendly hardware at a lower price point. The Silverburst version has a gloss silver-to-black burst finish, black hardware, and Jackson's distinctive pointed headstock and sharkfin inlays.
Key features
- Body: Poplar with an arched top; the Silverburst model has a quilt-maple arched top.
- Neck: Bolt-on maple "speed" neck with graphite reinforcement and a scarf joint.
- Fingerboard: Amaranth, 12"–16" compound radius, 24 jumbo frets.
- Inlays: Pearloid sharkfin.
- Pickups: HSS — Jackson single-coils in the neck and middle, plus a high-output Jackson humbucker at the bridge.
- Controls: One volume, one tone, and a 5-way pickup selector.
- Bridge: Jackson-branded Floyd Rose double-locking tremolo.
The bridge humbucker is the star of the show for heavier music. It's designed for high-output tones, so it's well suited to metal riffs, hard rock, palm muting, and saturated lead playing.
What's interesting about the JS34 is that it's HSS rather than the more typical HH setup on many Jacksons. The middle and neck single-coils give you cleaner, brighter sounds, so you can get considerably more tonal variety than you'd expect from its aggressive appearance.
The five-way switch gives you access to the bridge humbucker, the two single-coils, and combinations between them.
The 12"–16" compound radius is designed to be relatively comfortable for both chording lower on the neck and fast playing/bending higher up. The 24 jumbo frets and slim maple speed neck reinforce its shred/metal orientation.
The Floyd Rose-style double-locking tremolo is particularly useful if you want dive bombs, vibrato, and dramatic pitch effects. The tradeoff is that restringing and changing tunings are more involved than with a fixed bridge.
