AMS Neve 1073LB, unit A
The 1073 is the input module Rupert Neve put in the 80-series consoles at the start of the 1970s, and it is still the microphone preamplifier people mean when they say Neve. Class A, a transformer on the way in and a transformer on the way out. A vocal gets larger and a little closer. There is a presence to it that sits a voice forward before you touch an equalizer, and the bass is round rather than tight. Drums, bass guitar, and vocals have been going through this circuit for fifty years because it does that one thing and does not get boring.
The 1073LB is AMS Neve’s own 500-series version of that preamp: mic gain, a line input, phantom, phase, and the high-pass. This is one module, listed on its own. There is a second 1073LB, a 1073LBEQ, and an empty R10 if you want the rack they have been living in. Smoke-free studio. It works.
