The Grandmaster Elite is Gold Tone's top-line F-style mandolin. The top is aged old-growth Swiss and Italian spruce: slow-grown, tight-grained and stable, stiff enough to move air without being driven hard. That is the spec that most separates a $4,000 mandolin from a $900 one, and it is the one you hear first.

Back and sides are 4A North American maple with a three-piece maple neck, which stays put where a one-piece moves with the seasons. The fingerboard is ebony on a 6 inch radius, comfortable for chop chords without fighting you higher up the neck. The finish is hand-applied nitrocellulose lacquer in Gold Tone's vintage leather finish, thin enough that the top can keep opening up over the years.
