Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

If you are looking for something a little different for the vintage mic collection then you might want to consider this very unique and somewhat rare Altec 633A Dynamic microphone manufactured in the 1950's. The mic has a very modern / contemporary design that was a signature part of Altec's line up. It comes with all the accessories shown including the period desk stand shown. This 633A model was originally sold by Western Electric in the 1940's before the company became Altec and the same model was sold under their name for about 10 to 15 years before being discontinued.

This mic was called a "salt shaker" due to it's very unique and obvious styling.

It should be noted that the mic does actually work and sounds just as it should but the output is on the lower side and I would rate it at about 70%. This mic can still be used but I have heard far healthier examples. It really should be used as a prop mic due to the weaker output.

Pic # 2 shows both this model and the 632C along with their basic characteristics. The 633A was a basic dynamic mic set at high impedance being completely void of bass like the microphones today and was a great mic for general broadcasting and paging purposes but happens to make for an excellent harp mic today as it has a grittier, old school sound.

Pic # 3 shows this very model mic being used in a live performance by The Beatles sometime around the early 1960's.

This mic is being sold for far less than it would be if it was a perfect working example. I've seen these go for upwards of $450.00 on Ebay and Reverb in great working condition.

You'll notice right away that the 633A and stand are in very good overall condition and certainly above average though the stands shows the same amount of wear. The mic comes with the original hunter green paint scheme. There are typical scuff marks and lite scratches but it's free of dents, fractures or corrosion. I'd rate the condition of the mic and stand a true 7 on a scale of 1 - 10 and the stand an easy 7 on a  scale of 1 - 10. These older mics are usually in very rough physical condition.

The mic comes with a short 12 inch cable that runs down the length of the lower adapter and chrome riser. It exits out the rear bottom riser / handle of the stand. The cable is properly wired in case you ever plan on replacing the element with something that works better.

The cable is soft, pliable and shows no exterior wear. It comes with a vintage quality Cannon male 1/4 inch end connector that's properly wired and completes the look of this display piece.

The chrome riser / handle does twist loose from the base so that the handler could walk around with the mic and use that riser as a handle as it was intended.

The base / stand is lite weight painted aluminum design with a bottom rubber pad / gasket and works well for the 633A giving it a bit of height to work with. The dimensions of the mic with stand are appx 12 inches high X 5 wide when the mic is raised fully upright. It's a nice combination. You can always remove the mic from the stands riser if need.

The stand shows extremely lite wear in the form of tiny scratches here and there. No dents or fractures. This mic will draw plenty of attention anywhere it's displayed.

These older Altec model mics seem to be even more collectible than the Shure 55S interestingly enough and harder to come by.

As with all my vintage items...
