FOR THE PERSON WHO WANTS TO ACTUALLY GIG WITH A VINTAGE FENDER BASS - NOT JUST LOOK AT IT.
DETAILS: This 1979 Fender Precision Bass has been used quite a bit, and while it may not qualify for someone's "mint condition" glass display case, it's a GREAT player, and - except for the replacement Fender tortoiseshell pickguard and added thumb rest above the pickguard - it looks like it's "all there". Frets are original and in OUTSTANDING shape - plenty of life left in these original frets.
WEIGHT: This bass weighs 11.3 pounds.
CONDITION: According to the Reverb guide, we consider this bass to be in "Good" condition. There is noticeable wear to the original black finish, including some non-smooth areas. The finish has also been worn to the wood next to the thumb rest, but it feels smooth and does not feel like a "divot" like I have seen on other basses. The most significant mark is on the back of the neck at the first three frets (see photo). At some point in the past, this bass must have been hit hard enough on the back of the neck to fracture the finish in that area and cause a diagonal hairline. IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A CRACK - We have repeatedly tried to flex the neck in that location to see if the hairline moves, and it does not move. Please take this into consideration, because you are buying this bass "AS IS". The bass neck seems to be rock solid and stable - no tuning stability issues AT ALL.
PLAYABILITY: The neck is an EXCELLENT player with 100% original frets in excellent condition. Neck is nice and straight with just the right amount of relief. Very comfortable play action. Currently strung with Rotosound Swing Bass 66 round-wound strings.
ORIGINALITY: The body has a factory sticker in the neck pocket with the same serial number as the neck, so you can be reasonably certain that this bass is not a "mutt" that was put together from a collection of bass parts. See the close-up photo of the neck pocket. The original black finish is in the neck pocket and also in the pickup and control cavities, so you know that this bass was not refinished.
ELECTRONICS: As for the electronics, the controls and jack are correct for 1979, and so is the pickup, although the wires on the pickup have been cut and re-spliced for some unknown reason. Everything works and sounds EXCELLENT. All solder joints seem to be original except for the solder joint holding the tone capacitor. That one looks odd, but the capacitor is the correct type for the period.
ACCESSORIES: This bass comes with a non-original Fender hard case in excellent condition.
>>> PLEASE BE ADVISED - I have tried my best to describe this bass as completely and as accurately as possible. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE if you find any ding, dent, scratch or any other cosmetic mark that I may not have specifically mentioned or is not evident from any photos. ASK FOR MORE PHOTOS IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT THE CONDITION.
