Collings 0002 Sinker Redwood & Sinker Honduran Mahogany #37027

There is a particular beauty in a guitar whose most extraordinary qualities are expressed with quiet confidence. This Collings 0002 pairs the graceful lines and understated appointments of a non herringbone 2 style with an exceptionally uncommon combination of sinker redwood and sinker Honduran mahogany. It is a compelling departure from the woods most often associated with Collings, bringing a distinctly inviting tonal palette to a design celebrated for its elegance, balance, and intimacy.

Sinker redwood is an especially enticing choice for a player drawn to warmth, sensitivity, and harmonic color. Paired with sinker Honduran mahogany, it promises a lovely meeting of richness and definition, with the redwood’s expressive character complemented by mahogany’s woody clarity and focused midrange. It is a pairing that invites you to explore the space between notes, where the bloom of a chord and the lingering resonance of a melody become as meaningful as the initial attack. For fingerstyle passages, gently articulated chords, and expressive accompaniment, the appeal is easy to imagine.

Beneath the top, Adirondack spruce braces follow a prewar scalloped X pattern, while the omission of the tongue brace further distinguishes this particular build. At just 3 pounds, 15 ounces, the guitar has an appealing lightness that suits its intimate proportions. The 25.4" scale length lends a purposeful feel beneath the fingers, giving this graceful instrument a satisfying sense of reach and authority.

Its appointments are beautifully judged. Ivoroid body binding frames the woods with a soft, classic contrast, while wood purflings and a traditional 2 style rosette give the top an elegant finish without herringbone. A 3 style mosaic backstrip adds a fine decorative thread to the sinker mahogany back. The ebony pyramid bridge is especially fitting here, its sculptural simplicity echoing the slotted headstock and lending the guitar a wonderfully timeless silhouette. Across the ebony fingerboard, short pattern abalone diamonds and squares offer small flashes of color, enough ornament to reward a closer look while allowing the woods to remain the center of attention.

The Honduran mahogany neck features Collings’ standard modified V profile, with a 1 3/4" nut width and 2 3/16" bridge spacing that balance fretting room with a comfortably gathered feel at the picking hand. Medium 18% nickel silver frets, a fully adjustable truss rod, and Collings’ mortise and tenon hybrid neck joint complete the playing platform. Nickel Waverly tuning machines complement the slotted headstock with handsome simplicity and precise adjustment.

Finished in high gloss nitrocellulose lacquer and accompanied by a deluxe hard case, this Collings 0002 brings together familiar craftsmanship and an unusually personal choice of materials. Its beauty lies in the conversation between those elements: the restraint of the appointments, the warmth suggested by the woods, and the care evident in every contour. For the player seeking a Collings with an uncommon voice and a quietly captivating presence, this is a particularly alluring expression of the 000.
