TASCAM 414 MKII Multitrack 4-Track Cassette Recorder

Overview

This TASCAM 414 MKII has been serviced, cleaned, calibrated, and tested, and is ready for use.

Recording and playback have been tested on all four tracks, and all core functions operate properly. A demonstration video is included with the listing showing recording and playback on all four tracks, along with the modifications in operation.

As with any analog cassette multitrack recorder, variations in frequency response and noise between tracks are normal.

The unit is in great cosmetic condition with normal signs of use.

Noise reduction has not been touched.

Effect sends and returns appear to function properly and were lightly tested.

Erase Head Bypass Modification

This recorder has been modified with individual erase head bypass switches, allowing you to toggle the erase head on or off for each track.

This is especially useful for sound-on-sound recording with tape loops. The usual method of blocking the erase head with tinfoil can be inconvenient and inconsistent. Simply disconnecting the erase head massively degrades recording quality. Both methods also disable the erase function for all four tracks at once.

This modification eliminates these limitations, maintaining normal recording quality while allowing you to independently select which tracks have the erase head bypassed.

The modification is demonstrated in the attached video.

Half-Speed Modification

This recorder has been modified with a selectable half-speed mode.

Switching to half speed changes the transport from the Portastudio's high-speed playback to approximately normal cassette speed. After switching to normal speed, the pitch control should be adjusted counterclockwise to dial into normal speed. The pitch control can then be adjusted further to go even slower than normal speed.

Tape Out Modification

The original TASCAM 414 MKII only provides stereo left/right outputs. This recorder has been modified with individual RCA tape outputs for each of the four tracks.

The outputs provide the direct playback signal from each track before the mixer section, making it easy to transfer all four tracks as separate audio files into a DAW or external mixer/recorder. Without this modification, each track must be transferred one at a time through the stereo outputs, which will cause the tracks to drift out of sync due to normal wow and flutter variations between playback passes.

Service Performed

Each recorder is completely disassembled, serviced, reassembled, calibrated, and tested before being listed for sale.

Mechanical Service:

• Complete disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly
• Replaced all belts with factory equivalents
• Treated pinch roller with rubber rejuvenator
• Oiled the capstan bearing for lower wow and flutter
• Oiled the motor bearing for a quieter motor and optimal performance

Electrical Service:

• Cleaned all switches, potentiometers, and faders
• Cleaned and demagnetized the tape transport for optimal performance
• Reflowed connector solder joints where needed to prevent intermittent connections caused by age and mechanical stress.
• Replaced failed track 1 fader
• Replaced broken headphone jack
• Reattached broken play head wires

Calibration & Modification:

• Calibrated tape speed, playback level, record level, and record bias to ensure accurate recording and playback.
• Installed the half-speed modification
• Installed Individual pre mixer tape outs
• Installed erase bypass switches
• Measured wow and flutter at approximately 0.09% RMS (factory spec)

Each unit includes a printed service form documenting any issues found, repairs performed, calibrations made, and the testing completed.

Testing

This recorder was tested by recording and playing back an entire side of a cassette tape on all four tracks. This test is performed a minimum of two times, totaling approximately 4–6 hours. During testing, music is recorded in stereo on two tracks at a time, making it easy to compare the recording and playback performance of each track for level, clarity, and consistency. Any issues discovered during testing are corrected before the recorder is listed for sale.
