Up for sale is a stunning and increasingly rare Black Ernie Ball Music Man Classic Sterling 4-string electric bass. Part of the acclaimed and now-discontinued Classic series, this instrument combines the compact, fast-playing body and neck profile of the Sterling with vintage-spec "Classic" appointments. It retains the old school Music Man bridge with the string foam mutes with mute lift. This is unlike the more current Sterling models made today which have the bridges without a foam mute section.

The original owner never played it out. It's in showcase condition. I'm selling this one because I found another Classic Sterling in a different color.

I modified both of the Classic Sterlings with an additional pickup in the neck position. You can't buy original ones from Music Man. So I bought one from a company in South Korea called Woo Sung Chorus. They make exacting replicas of the original pickups using the same materials, same weights and sizing. What we wind up with is a finished product as close as it comes to the real McCoy in output ratings magnet strength and tone. They are the best replica makers I have found thus far.

I added an original EBMM 5-position lever blade to give you different pickup configurations. You get much more out of this bass with the second pickup.

The first position on the lever activates the original bridge pickup hum-bucker. This would be the original configuration and sound of the of the Classic Sterling that everyone gets when you get the bass. The rest of the settings give you more options. I have included a chart showing these different options.
But wait... That's not all.... I am also including 2 additional pick guards! One is brown tort and the other dark grey pearl.

Here are the other features & specs:

  • Body: Gloss black finish.
  • Neck: Figured/select maple neck with a 7.5" radius fretboard for an incredibly comfortable, fast feel. Vintage amber tint gloss finish on the entire neck.
  • Electronics: Active 2-band EQ with Music Man hum-bucking pickup in bridge position and a replica made by a 3rd party (Woo Sung Chorus) in the neck position.
  • Pickups: Both pickups are ceramic magnets which gives a hotter output with an edgier, aggressive mid-range bark that slices through dense mixes cleanly. Wiring is in series.
  • Controls: Master Volume, Treble, Bass with a 5-position blade lever switch. See diagram.
  • Hardware: Chrome hardware with classic tapered-post Schaller tuners and string-through bridge.
  • Mutes: Original factory bridge mutes are fully intact and 100% operational.
  • Strap Buttons: Dunlop strap buttons with wider top to keep your strap from falling off. Original music man buttons are included.
  • Pick guards: Black Gloss, Dark Grey Pearl and Brown Tortoise.

Condition:

  • Mint: There were 2 small finish chips (one on the body and one on the head stock) that have since been repaired. No other swirls, scratches, chips, dings or dents. Collectors condition.
  • Frets: Minimal to no wear.
  • Playability: Professionally set up, straight neck, truss rod turns smoothly in both directions, and low, fast action.

What's Included:

  • Original Ernie Ball Music Man hardshell case and Music Man tool pouch with the wrenches you need to do set ups. Case is in excellent condition. No keys found. But I'm inquiring with Ernie Ball if any can be obtained.
  • New Dean Markley Signature strings put on.
