"The Legendary Working Man's Jazz Guitar"

The  Gibson ES-175D is a legendary hollow-body archtop electric guitar, most famous for being the first year the model was equipped with PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucking pickups. It is widely considered the quintessential "jazz box," but its construction also makes it surprisingly versatile for rock and fusion.

The Gibson ES-175D is one of history's most versatile electric guitars, most famously associated with jazz legends Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, and progressive rock pioneer Steve Howe. Introduced in 1953 as the dual-pickup ("D") version of the original ES-175, it earned the nickname "workhorse of modern jazz guitar" for its warm, rich, and articulate tone.

Iconic Jazz and Fusion Players

The ES-175D became synonymous with the jazz elite due to its feedback-resistant laminated body and comfortable 16-inch lower bout.

  • Joe Pass: Perhaps the most famous exponent of the 175D, he used a sunburst model until 1970. His landmark Virtuoso sessions were recorded using his 175D, mostly captured acoustically to avoid vibration issues.
  • Herb Ellis: He loved his 1953 ES-175 so much that Gibson later released the ES-165 Herb Ellis signature model based on it.
  • Jim Hall: He played the ES-175 throughout his long and legendary career.
  • Pat Metheny: For much of his early career, Metheny relied on a 1960 ES-175N (Natural finish).
  • Wes Montgomery: While famous for the L-5 CES, Montgomery used an ES-175 early in

Rock, Blues, and Beyond

While built for jazz, the ES-175D’s ability to handle overdrive made it a staple in other genres. Jazz Guitar Online +1

  • Steve Howe: The Yes and Asia guitarist played his ES-175D extensively throughout his career; Gibson later produced a Steve Howe Signature ES-175 in his honor.
  • B.B. King: Before moving to his signature "Lucille" model, the blues giant played a 1960 ES-175 in the late 1950s.
  • Buck Dharma: He used an ES-175 to record the iconic opening riff and clean sections of "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult.
  • The Edge: U2's guitarist used an ES-175 during the famous Zoo TV Tour.
  • Izzy Stradlin: The former Guns N' Roses guitarist famously played a white ES-175.
  • John Fogerty: He used an ES-175 on early Creedence Clearwater Revival albums before it was stolen
