OG Late 1980s Zildjian K/Z 13" hi hats
These are vintage 13" Zildjian K/Z hi hats from the late 1980s that I got on a trade from the original owner in 1993 and haven't played at all since 2002. Zildjian first released the K/Z hats in 1987, and the small, shallow K. Zildjian die stamp on the top cymbal appears to be the 1981-1988 EAK stamp, dating these firmly in the 1987-88 production period. The stamp is very shallow in the deep lathing grooves and hard to see. I tried to get pics with different lighting to make it easier.
There is one small flea bite in the edge of the K top, but no cracks or key holing of any kind. I've always kept them stored and transported in hard cases, and the've rarely seen the light of day since the early 2000s. Screened logos are completely worn off the K top and mostly worn off of the hexagon stamped Z bottom cymbal. There is a fair amount of patina and stick marks, as expected for nearly 40 year old cymbals.
The late '80s machine assisted hand hammering with chunkier lathing on the K top make these hats sound and feel very different from current robo-hammered and pin-lathed K/Z hats. They sound and play as amazing as they did when I got them in the early '90s. I've moved on to larger, thinner, darker hats and it's time for these vintage beauties to find a new home.
