The Haken Audio Continuum Controller is a three-dimensional midi controller with integrated sound generation, the EaganMatrix.
With this instrument, polyphonic sliding sounds can be played dynamically by pressure and in vertical position. Internally Continuum has a synthesizer with atmospheric and powerful sounds. The fingerboard simultaneously processes data on the X, Y and Z axes for one to a maximum of 16 fingers. X (left to right) transmits the pitch for each individual note. This parameter can range from light vibrato to dramatic note intervals across the entire playing surface. The Continuum tracks each finger individually with microscopic accuracy, using up to 12 independent Hall-Effect sensors per finger. The analog output of each sensor is digitized by ultra-high speed A/D converters. A typical note played on the Continuum will have data from hundreds of thousands of Hall-Effect samples, allowing for exponentially more accuracy and sensitivity. When a violinist plays a note, the note always starts slightly out of tune. A skilled player will very quickly slide into the appropriate pitch. This split-second correction is a major reason acoustic instruments sound so soulful and alive. With a Continuum it is possible to experience the same magical interaction!
The 21s8x Continuum has the same connectivity and sonic capabilities as the larger Continuums but has lower weight and better portability It's range can be extended 6 additional octaves using built-in octave buttons. The Continuum's unique sensitive playing surface seamlessly interfaces with the powerful EaganMatrix Sound Engine for a truly organic playing experience. The Continuum ships with over 500 presets, each of them a unique interaction with sound! Designed by Dr. Lippold Haken and hand-built by Cameron Fuller in Champaign, Illinois, each Continuum Fingerboard is meticulously assembled for optimal quality. We operate like a premium guitar craftsman would, building in small numbers, carefully crafting instruments with love and attention to detail.
Each Continuum includes the EaganMatrix Sound Engine, enabling the subtle-to-dramatic musical possibilities of the instrument. The EaganMatrix creates a rich and complex relationship between the performer's fingers and the sound. For ultimate control, the Haken Editor allows users to finely craft their musical sound by editing the EaganMatrix directly. The Haken Editor is available for Mac or PC. The EaganMatrix can also be edited by using one of an ever-growing number of custom Overlays, making programming easier and more directed.
