Video: Korg Synth Setups for Synthwave, Trap, and Acid House

Whether you're trying to create gauzy synthwave, pulsing acid house, or deep trap beats, Korg has the synths you'll need.

Through a combination of entry-level Volcas, the affordable polysynth Minilogue XD, and other machines in the Korg lineup, you're actually able to create hardware setups for each of those genres (and more) with just Korg synths. Nick from Korg joined us in the Reverb studio to show us how.

Thanks to Korg's analog sync function, all of these machines can easily be chained together to play in time with one another. In the video above, Nick is using the Volca Mix to set the master clock for the rest of his synth array.

"This [first] setup, having a Minilogue XD Keyboard and a Minilogue XD Module, alongside a Volca Beats and a Volca Mix, is a whole setup that includes drums; one synth that can be leads, basses, or chords; and another synth that can be leads, basses, or chords."

Getting into the genre-specific setups, Nick swaps the Minilogue keyboard for a Korg Monologue, a monophonic bass synth he says is perfect for synthwave bass. The XD Module will be providing the lead sounds, the Volca Beats supplies the drums, and the Volca Mix keeps it all together.

If you're making trap beats, you'll of course want to use quick hi-hats and, perhaps, some kind of eerie melody on top. Nick keeps the Monologue for bass, but adds a Volca Sample for sequenced looped hats, rim-shots, and claps. The Volca FM, which lets you create and manipulate complex FM synth sounds, gives this song its melody.

For an acid house track, Nick is able to use the Monologue again for classic acid-style basslines, a Volca Beats unit for vintage, house-style drums, and the Volca Mix for its master clock.
