Korg Releases the New Volca Sample 2

Over the last several years, Korg has steadily grown its Volca Series into a go-to for burgeoning producers and seasoned synthesists alike. The series is already stacked with a solid range of compact, affordable, and inviting synths and drums machines, and today, the brand is adding another to the mix: the new Korg Volca Sample 2.

The original Korg Volca Sample was a hit right away as a sort of sample-based drum machine. It came packed with 100 built-in stock samples to play around with, but the real fun was in using your own. Unfortunately, the process of getting your own samples loaded onto the hardware wasn't exactly a walk in the park and the original unit's memory was fairly limited.

With the new Volca Sample 2, Korg seeks to change and fix those pain points without messing with much else. First, the onboard memory has been beefed up to 130 seconds/8 MB, and the unit comes loaded with 150 presets (that users can overwrite if they like) and 50 empty user slots. The new Sample also comes with new sample content made in collaboration with Japanese artists Moe Shop and TORIENA. Notably, it also features a micro USB port, which supports MIDI.

The new Volca Sample also features eight-part polyphony (versus the original's three-part), 16 recording patterns (up from the original's one), and two different Step Jump modes (up from the original's one). It also packs more sequencer parts—16 parts by 16 steps, whereas the original only featured one part.

Lovers of the original Sample will still be able to enjoy the same 10 hours of battery life with six AA batteries, motion sequencer, analog isolator, active step, step jump, and swing, reverse, and per-part reverb functions. Pattern chaining is also built-in rather than something you need to manually trigger.

The new Korg Volca Sample 2 is expected to start shipping in September, but is available for pre-order on Reverb now.
