Gibson Announces Custom Models for 2 Metal Titans: Tony Iommi & Adam Jones | NAMM 2020

For NAMM 2020, Gibson has already announced its new Slash Collection, featuring '50s Standard Les Pauls and J-45 acoustics in the preferred finishes of the Guns N' Roses guitarist. The company is garnering more hard rock and metal bonafides with two new Custom Shop releases, one each for Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and Tool's Adam Jones.

Fans of either Gibson or Iommi may have seen the teasers for Iommi's "Monkey" SG on social media. In December, Iommi shared a video on Twitter talking about Gibson and playing the modded 1964 SG Special he used to record most of Black Sabbath's debut, while Gibson Chief Merchant Officer Cesar Gueikian shared photos of the pair on his Instagram account.

Now, Gibson has made the news official, announcing a limited-edition Custom Shop run:

"50 exact replicas have been created, 25 right-handed and 25 left-handed like the original, each signed and numbered by Tony Iommi himself. No detail was overlooked in the construction and aging, telling the complete story of the 'Monkey' from the zero fret to the stop tailpiece bushings to the legendary pickups , which were handmade in the UK by the apprentice of the late John Birch. Each guitar will even include an exclusive replica of Tony's silver cross necklace with a coffin case, a replica of Tony's leather touring guitar strap and a 1960s replica case."

Gibson is also announcing a signature model for Adam Jones, recreating the 1979 Les Paul Custom Silverburst the Tool guitarist has played for many years. However, Gibson as of yet has released no photos or further details for the new model.

In addition, the Custom Shop plans to launch a number of other eye-catching guitars, including what it calls the Historic ES Collection—with semi-hollowbodies accurately modeled after vintage units from Gibson's vault—and a rainbow-colored assortment of reissues like the 1963 and 1964 Firebird V, 1967 Mahogany Flying V, Les Paul Special Double Cut, and more.

Gibson's top luthiers will also recreate three versions of the 1960 Les Paul Standard for the guitar's 60th anniversary: "Those made in the first third of the year (V1) share the same specs as their 1959 peers, while the middle third (V2) have thinner neck profiles, different knobs and brighter colors. The final third (V3) feature even thinner neck profiles."

Many, if not all, of these guitars are expected to be on hand at this week's NAMM convention in Anaheim, California. We'll update this page when we have more info and photos. In the meantime, explore more than 2,400 vintage, used, and new Gibson Custom Shop models on Reverb.
