The PRS SE Hollowbody I Piezo brings something genuinely new to the PRS SE lineup: the rich, open response of a hollowbody combined with a slimmer contoured flatback design that sits against the player more like a solidbody electric guitar.

Add PRS 85/15 “S” humbuckers, an LR Baggs/PRS piezo system, a carved maple top, mahogany back, Wide Fat neck and gorgeous Orange Tiger Smokeburst finish, and you have an instrument capable of moving from full electric tones to convincing acoustic-style textures—and blending the two together.

What Makes the Hollowbody I Different?

The flatback design is one of the most important things to understand about this guitar.

Traditional hollowbody guitars often use a carved back inspired by acoustic-guitar construction. For the Hollowbody I, PRS takes a different approach.

The solid mahogany back is slimmer and contoured to sit against the player's body with a more modern, electric-guitar-like feel. You still get the open resonance and airy character associated with hollowbody construction, but in a package designed to feel immediately comfortable to players accustomed to solidbody electrics.

PRS also uses an internal center-block design to help maintain sustain and control feedback while preserving the instrument's hollowbody character.

The result is neither simply a solidbody nor a traditional hollowbody.

It has its own personality.

Orange Tiger Smokeburst

And this one certainly looks the part.

The Orange Tiger Smokeburst finish highlights the flame maple veneer beautifully, with the darker outer burst framing the figure of the top.

Underneath is a carved maple top paired with a solid mahogany back—a classic combination that provides both visual depth and a strong tonal foundation.

Cream body and neck binding, PRS bird inlays and nickel hardware complete an instrument that looks appropriately upscale without becoming overly ornate.

This is one of those finishes we think photographs well but tends to make an even stronger impression when you see the actual guitar at Northeast Music Center.

85/15 “S” Electric Voice

A pair of uncovered PRS 85/15 “S” humbuckers handles the traditional electric side of the guitar.

Known for clarity and an extended frequency response, these pickups are a particularly good match for the Hollowbody I because they allow the natural resonance of the instrument to remain present rather than masking it with an overly dark pickup voice.

The 3-way toggle keeps magnetic pickup selection straightforward:

From articulate cleans and warm rhythm sounds to blues, rock and singing lead tones, there's plenty of familiar electric-guitar territory available before you even touch the piezo system.

LR Baggs/PRS Piezo – An Entirely Different Voice

Then the Hollowbody I Piezo changes character.

Six individual piezo-equipped saddles in the PRS Adjustable Stoptail Piezo bridge work with proprietary LR Baggs/PRS electronics to capture the strings from the bridge and create acoustic-style sounds that are fundamentally different from the magnetic pickups.

The guitar gives you independent Magnetic Volume and Piezo Volume controls, allowing you to move between electric and acoustic-style voices—or create your own blend of the two.

That ability is tremendously useful for performing musicians.

Play your electric parts through the 85/15 “S” pickups, bring in the piezo for an acoustic-flavored passage, or combine both systems to create layered textures that would normally require multiple instruments.

Two Pickup Systems – Two Signal Paths

The output system makes the Hollowbody I Piezo even more useful on stage and in the studio.

Using the Mix/Piezo output, you can blend the magnetic pickups and piezo system into a single signal path.

For a more advanced rig, the signals can be routed separately—sending the magnetic pickups to your electric guitar amp, modeler or pedalboard while sending the piezo signal to an acoustic amplifier, DI, PA or recording input.

That can turn one guitar into the centerpiece of an extremely flexible live rig.

The piezo volume is active when using the Mix/Piezo output, giving you direct control over how much acoustic-style character you want to introduce.

Wide Fat Neck – A Great Match for a Hollowbody

PRS chose the Wide Fat neck profile for the Hollowbody I, and we think that makes sense.

This profile has more substance in the hand than PRS's Wide Thin shape without becoming cumbersome. Combined with the 25" scale length and 10" fretboard radius, it provides a comfortable platform for chord work, rhythm playing, fingerstyle approaches, blues, jazz and expressive lead playing.

The rosewood fretboard carries classic PRS bird inlays, while the set maple neck contributes to the smooth, substantial feel of the instrument.
