"Larger sound," "thicker sound," and "wide dynamic range" - artists who have been using Yamaha for a long time were looking for a sound that combined these three elements in Yamaha drums.

Therefore, Yamaha has poured the technology and insight cultivated through years of research and development and extensive manufacturing experience into creating the best drum set that embodies these three elements: "louder sound," "thicker sound," and "wider dynamic range." I aimed to create it.

The result is the PHX, which produces an unprecedentedly wide dynamic range and rich mid-range sound.

・Hybrid Shell

The "hybrid shell structure" was devised to realize the PHX concept of "loud sound," "thick sound," and "wide dynamic range."

The structure places the heaviest and hardest wood in the center and gradually softens the material toward the outside, creating ideal shell vibration.

Jatoba, the hardest of all shell materials, is used as the core material, which is then sandwiched between the heavy and hard material Kapol, and maple is used for the outer layer.

After making many prototypes and conducting sound checks with artists, we found the ideal shell.

・Bearing Edge

The "bearing edge" determines the tone and pronunciation of the drum.

PHX sets the bearing edge angle of all shell sizes to 30°, while changing the roundness of the apex that contacts the head for each tom, floor tom, and bass drum.

As a result, the bass drum has a clearer sound, and the tom has a fuller sound.

The edges are hand-crafted by craftsmen who are familiar with the characteristics of each type of wood, and undergo thorough polishing and special surface treatment to create the best condition.

・Hardware

Parts such as lugs, mounting systems, and hoops play important roles in achieving the ideal sound.

The mount system uses Y.E.S.S.II, which is Yamaha's original Y.E.S.S., which does not inhibit tom vibration, and has been significantly evolved to match the PHX. It holds the heavy PHX shell stably and maximizes the vibration of the shell, and the maple plate brings out the mid-low range sound.

The hook lugs are designed to minimize the installation area of the lugs so as not to interfere with the vibration of the shell, suppress excess overtones, and highlight the fundamental tone. The effect of this Y.E.S.S.II and the hook lug gives the PHX a live sound, yet a well-balanced and distinctive tone.

Yamaha's unique 3.0mm thick aluminum die-cast hoop achieves both high rigidity and light weight. The head vibrates to the maximum, creating a melodic tone and a moderate attack feeling.

・Beautiful Shell Exteriors

The PHX is not only functional as a drum, but also beautiful as an instrument.

We offer two types of exterior surfaces: traditional maple wood and ash wood, which features beautiful wood grain, so that you can choose according to your preference.

By repeating painting and polishing many times, a deep beautiful color and high hardness are achieved despite the very thin coating thickness. Furthermore, the ash material has an ultra-thin textured finish that is used only on PHX and has a coating thickness that is less than half the usual thickness. The beauty of the wood grain stands out and the effect on shell vibration is suppressed.

Hook lugs and aluminum die-cast hoops are available in gold parts in addition to chrome parts. Gives a more luxurious feel to the drum set.
