About This Listing

John Mayes Jumbo Parlor 2004. Figured curly redwood/Madagascar Rosewood

Mr. Mayes built for Bourgeois for a long time and also for McPherson. He had his own one man shop for a number of years, and his guitars are very well regarded in the high end Luthier world.  This was his 40th from his own bench.

CONUS sale only due to Madagascar Rosewood!

In fantastic condition, but has been Played! A few SMALL love taps on the top, and one near the end pin. Also a few SMALL drop fills on the beautiful figured Redwood top. Back and sides are amazingly clean.

Just back from a complete inspection inside and out, complete fret level and dress, nut work, setup, and new R.Taylor wave compensated bone saddle install. All done by my pal and fave Luthier, Tim Luranc of R. Taylor fame. Tim was Taylors FIRST employee, and the Head Luthier in charge of R.Taylor for the six years they built.
He is now Senior Repair Tech at Taylor El Cajon All systems are GO. This one is well worth the $300 of work by Tim L!

When Tim first saw this he assumed the B/S were Brazilian!!!

This wonderful axe has had a number of former owners. It is a real peach, and now has had a fine restore to complete playability and perfect intonation.

No cracks, finish issues, or other problems!

The following description is from a former owner:

"The setup is for a finger style player, no buzz, quite articulate… Even Bass to treble. Clean fundamentals. Long sustain, nice projection… I had thought that the redwood/mad rose combination would be a softer, more mellow sound without bite. I have been surprised both with it's unplugged volume and complexity, very pleasing indeed. This Mays has a very soft touch, playing is truly effortless. And it has a comfortable (almost) OM body size even though it is referred to as a Jumbo Parlor.
I agree!

Depth at Neck heel: 3 7/16"
Gotoh Delta 510 1 to 21 Tuners. Gold with black buttons, work perfectly!
White abalone short pattern slotted diamonds on FB.
The markers at the 12th fret are matching stick on type. Never noticed until taking pics! Haha

Grained ivoriod strap pin.
Gold Taylor end pin.
No pickup now, but endpin is drilled and ready if you choose to install your fave.

The neck is a great cross between a shallow C and a V. I have small hands and find this neck wonderful.

If your hands are large this may not be a good fit.

Comes with a fully functional Canadian made TKL black 5 latch arch top case. In good condition, but has a few small scrapes and tears in the Tolux, and the strap to hold it open is torn loose on the top end.

I figure the upgrades to Madagascar Rosewood and curly Redwood would probably cost near my asking price!

Full disclosure:

A former Repair Luthier glued the Fretboard extension to the top. It was originally attached with two bolts, like a Collings or Bourgeois. Has no effect on sound or playability, both of which are spectacular! The current neck angle is excellent and there is Plenty of saddle showing if you want to lower the action. This should be NO PROBLEM for years to come, but may eventually need to be steamed off if a neck set is needed in the DISTANT future. Were it not for this I would be asking considerably more money!!!

I take a lot of satisfaction in getting wonderful guitars back to perfect playability! Fortunately I have Tim Luranc to do any work I can not!

As always, this will be turned down to C concert, headstock and strings well padded, Swaddled inside and outside it's case, and double boxed! I consider packing guitars an art form. My theory is plan for the worst, pack like crazy, insure it up the wazoo, and pray.

Shipped USPS priority, insured by Heritage, adult signature required.

Any questions please ask.

Also, former owner discount available! I am a sucker for a nice reunion!!!

Cheers

Paul
