The former owner of this bass is a longtime customer of our store and astute collector. All of his basses are in immaculate condition, unless otherwise noted. The last 6 photos of this bass (6 shots following photos of the head/tuners) show some barely noticeable scratches/wear—you have to look hard to see them and they don't impact the performance—but we like to be up front about them.
This R. Hyde Zeal 5-string features a bookmatched redwood top with maple accent stripe over a walnut body, all designed and carved to highlight the top and accent line. The neck is a 5-piece flame maple/padauk design with set-neck construction. The clear matte finish allows every detail of the woodgrain to show.
Pickups are Nordstrand Neodymium Humbuckers with custom wood covers, routed through a 3-band preamp. As best we can tell, controls include volume, blend, treble, mid and bass knobs as well as a switch to toggle the pickups between serial and parallel operation (unfortunately, info on this boutique brand is a bit scarce). The volume knob doubles with a push/pull function to switch the 18V preamp on/off.
Philadelphia builder Ryan Hyde refers to The Zeal as his formula one car — built to look fast, play fast, and offer the most articulate tonality possible. The “single cut” body design increases sustain and makes extremely low action possible while also offering the most stable neck design possible, even with a very small area where the neck transitions to the body. A hardshell case is included.
