As a collector having experienced the “British Invasion” of the early to mid 1960’s VOX was the first brand of guitar I chose to begin my collection. And why not? These guitars and amps were the icons of the bands during that era. While US groups were playing mostly “slab”, “acoustic-electric”, and other “normal” guitars, the Brits hit the US with a new and fresh sound topped off with matching suits and the coolest and most stylish guitars and amps ever seen in the USA.
All of us from that time immediately recognize the parallelogram shape of the Phantom and the elliptical body of the Teardrop solid and acoustic (Phantom was always a solid body model).
JMI, the company who created the VOX brand of instruments, was one of the most innovative musical instruments builders in the history of electrified/amplified sound production. All their products were stylish and extraordinary. Without the VOX AC30, the Phantom and Teardrop guitars and basses, and the amazing Continental keyboard, the British invasion would most likely have been a slow walk into the US music world instead of the blockbuster we still remember.
Due to the popularity of those Brit groups, the demand for VOX products soared all over the world and quickly JMI realized they could never match the production levels necessary to meet the worldwide demand from their operations in the UK. They make an excellent choice by hiring EKO in Italy to take over the production for them.
This bass was made by EKO in Italy.
That was yet another example of the keenness of the business minds at JMI. All along the process of creating and then developing their business, they went outside for expertise and assistance. The Phantom is an excellent example of their creative initiative. They hired the London Design Center to design a “brand new guitar” that would be art as well as playable. And did it they did. The Phantom became one of the most iconic guitar shapes of all time.
As a player this guitar is amazing. Ask Fang, of Paul Revere and The Raiders, he played a Phantom IV. They stole the British Revolutionary War uniforms so why not steal the iconic UK bass guitar?
About this bass guitar:
It has a long “slim” fast neck.
Two single coil pickups with four poles each (one for each string).
Neck uses “Double T” aluminum reinforcement bar and has an adjustable truss rod.
I just had Kevin Smith of TONESMITH Guitars to refinish the body of this guitar in a beautiful purple metallic flake. It is totally beautiful.
It will come in a non-original gig bag or case.
