MESA/Boogie California Tweed 6V6 4:40 1x12 All-Tube Combo Amplifier

Warm, dimensional, touch-sensitive tube tone with five power levels and unmistakable MESA craftsmanship. The MESA/Boogie California Tweed 6V6 4:40 takes inspiration from the simplicity and musical response of classic American amplifiers and expands the concept with MESA’s sophisticated Multi-Watt power architecture, lush all-tube spring reverb, and a beautifully matched 12-inch speaker.

The California Tweed 6V6 4:40 is a very different side of MESA/Boogie.

There are no multiple high-gain channels or rows of mode switches here.

Instead, MESA focused on something wonderfully fundamental:

Great guitar tone.

One channel. Straightforward controls. Four 6V6 power tubes. Five selectable power settings. Exceptional dynamic response.

From shimmering cleans and warm edge-of-breakup sounds to rich, harmonically complex overdrive, the California Tweed rewards the player who uses picking dynamics, guitar volume, pedals, and touch as part of the instrument.

Available from Northeast Music Center, the California Tweed is a compelling choice for players who want boutique-level American tube tone with the engineering flexibility and build quality that have defined MESA/Boogie for decades.

A DIFFERENT SIDE OF MESA/BOOGIE

Mention MESA/Boogie and many guitarists immediately think of Mark Series lead tones or the massive aggression of a Dual Rectifier.

The California Tweed tells another part of the MESA story.

This amplifier reaches back toward the simplicity, openness, and dynamic response of classic American tube amps while applying decades of MESA engineering experience.

Instead of giving you several channels and dozens of switching combinations, the California Tweed gives you one exceptional signal path and encourages you to explore it.

Turn the guitar down.

Pick softly.

Dig in.

Push the Gain.

Change the wattage.

Add a pedal.

The amplifier responds.

That's the experience the California Tweed was designed around.

FOUR 6V6 POWER TUBES

At the heart of the California Tweed are:

4 × MESA 6V6 power tubes.

6V6 tubes have long been associated with some of the most beloved American guitar amplifiers ever built.

They can deliver beautiful clean tones, but what makes them particularly addictive is what happens as they're pushed.

The response becomes softer.

Harmonics begin to bloom.

The attack becomes more expressive.

And overdrive develops naturally rather than feeling disconnected from the clean sound underneath it.

MESA takes that familiar 6V6 personality and gives the player far greater control over when and how the power section begins to work.

FIVE POWER LEVELS — 40 / 30 / 20 / 10 / 2 WATTS

This is one of the California Tweed's defining features.

Instead of simply giving you a 40-watt amplifier and asking you to make it work everywhere, MESA gives you:

40 Watts

30 Watts

20 Watts

10 Watts

and:

2 Watts

These aren't simply volume settings.

MESA's Multi-Watt architecture changes how the power section operates, allowing different combinations and operating configurations of the 6V6 power tubes to create distinct power, response, and feel.

That gives the California Tweed remarkable flexibility.

40 WATTS — BIG, OPEN AND AUTHORITATIVE

At the full 40-watt setting, the California Tweed delivers its greatest clean headroom and authority.

This is where the amp feels broad, open, and substantial.

It's an excellent setting for players who want clean tone at stage volume, pedal users who need headroom, or anyone who simply loves the dimensional sound of four 6V6s working together.

30 & 20 WATTS — THE SWEET SPOT

Move down to 30 or 20 watts, and the relationship between volume, compression, and power-tube character begins to change.

You can push the amplifier harder without requiring the same room volume as the 40-watt setting.

For many players, these middle settings may become favorites.

There's still enough authority for real-world performance, but the power section becomes easier to engage.

10 & 2 WATTS — POWER-TUBE CHARACTER AT MANAGEABLE LEVELS

Then things get particularly interesting.

The 10-watt and especially 2-watt settings allow you to explore more of the California Tweed's natural tube compression and overdrive without operating the amplifier at full stage volume.

For home playing.

Recording.

Smaller rooms.

Or simply experimenting with the interaction between Gain and Master.

The lower-power settings make the California Tweed dramatically more useful than a traditional fixed-output vintage-style amplifier.

ONE CHANNEL — AND THAT'S THE POINT

The California Tweed doesn't need three channels.

The single-channel architecture is part of its personality.

You have:

Gain

Treble

Mid

Bass

Presence

Reverb

and:

Master Volume.

That's it.

But within those controls is an enormous amount of usable guitar tone.

Keep the Gain lower and increase the Master for open cleans.

Raise the Gain and the amplifier begins moving through edge-of-breakup territory.

Push it harder and the sound becomes increasingly saturated and harmonically rich.

Then use the guitar's volume control to move between those textures.

For players who enjoy interacting with an amplifier rather than simply switching between presets, this can be incredibly rewarding.

A BEAUTIFUL PEDAL PLATFORM

The California Tweed also makes an outstanding foundation for pedals.

Its open, dynamic clean sound gives overdrives, boosts, compressors, delays, reverbs, modulation, and other effects room to retain their individual personalities.

Set the amplifier clean and build the sound from your pedalboard.

Or set the California Tweed just at the edge of breakup and let boosts and overdrives push the amplifier itself.

Those two approaches can produce completely different results from the same rig.

That flexibility makes the California Tweed particularly appealing to players with carefully developed pedalboards.

JENSEN BLACKBIRD ALNICO 12" SPEAKER

A great combo amplifier is only as good as the speaker translating the circuit into the room.

MESA pairs the California Tweed 1x12 with a:

12-inch Jensen Blackbird AlNiCo speaker.

That's an important choice.

AlNiCo speakers are prized for their musical compression, sweetness, harmonic detail, and dynamic response.

Those qualities complement the California Tweed beautifully.

The amplifier isn't designed around extremely tight, aggressive modern high gain.

It's about:

Touch.

Dimension.

Warmth.

Harmonic complexity.

And the Jensen Blackbird helps preserve those qualities all the way from the output transformer to the room.

TUBE-DRIVEN SPRING REVERB

A vintage-inspired American amplifier deserves great spring reverb.

The California Tweed delivers it with a tube-driven long-tank spring reverb circuit.

The effect can add subtle depth behind the guitar or become a more prominent part of the sound when the Reverb control is increased.

Clean chords gain dimension.

Single notes bloom.

And lightly driven sounds take on the spacious quality players associate with great American tube combos.

It's not simply an added digital effect.

It's part of the amplifier.

TUBE-BUFFERED SERIES EFFECTS LOOP

MESA also gives the California Tweed something many genuinely vintage amplifiers don't provide:

A fully buffered tube-driven series effects loop.

That makes it much easier to integrate delays, reverbs, modulation, and other time-based effects into the amplifier when you're running the preamp with more Gain.

It's a perfect example of the California Tweed philosophy.

Vintage-inspired tone.

Modern usability.

NORMAL & LOW INPUTS

The California Tweed provides both:

Normal

and:

Low

inputs.

That gives players additional flexibility when moving between instruments with different pickup outputs.

Hot humbuckers.

Vintage-output single coils.

P-90s.

Active systems.

The amplifier can accommodate them while allowing you to choose how strongly the guitar hits the front end.

It's a simple feature, but a useful one.

FROM PRISTINE CLEAN TO ORGANIC OVERDRIVE

The California Tweed isn't a high-gain amplifier in the Rectifier sense.

That's not what it's supposed to be.

Its gain structure progresses naturally.

Beautiful clean.

Warm clean.

Edge of breakup.

Crunch.

Rich vintage-inspired overdrive.

The transition between those sounds feels organic because you're hearing different degrees of the same fundamental amplifier personality.

That continuity is one of the great pleasures of a well-designed single-channel tube amplifier.

BUILT FOR PLAYERS WHO USE THEIR HANDS

Some amplifiers create most of their tonal variation with switches.

The California Tweed creates much of its variation through the player.

Pick lightly and the amp relaxes.

Dig into the strings and it pushes back.

Turn the guitar volume down and the sound cleans up.

Roll it back up and the harmonics return.

Change pickups and the amplifier lets you hear the difference.

That's exactly why an amplifier like this can become incredibly personal.

Two guitarists can plug into the same California Tweed with identical settings and still sound noticeably different.

BUILT IN PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA

The California Tweed is built in Petaluma, California, continuing the tradition established by MESA founder Randall Smith.

The amplifier uses a rugged Baltic birch enclosure and the kind of professional construction expected from a MESA/Boogie amplifier.

At Northeast Music Center, that's an important part of why MESA remains such a compelling amplifier brand.

These amplifiers aren't designed simply around a specification sheet.

They're designed around musicians actually using them.

AN AMP YOU CAN BUILD A RIG AROUND

The California Tweed can be wonderfully simple.

Guitar.

Cable.

Amp.

Done.

But it can also become the centerpiece of a sophisticated pedalboard-based system.

That versatility is what makes this amplifier so appealing.

A Telecaster player looking for articulate cleans can find a home here.

A Strat player chasing expressive edge-of-breakup tones can find one too.

A Les Paul player who wants thick, harmonically rich vintage-style drive can push the front end and discover an entirely different side of the amplifier.

At Northeast Music Center, we'd recommend the California Tweed to the player who values feel as much as features.

It isn't trying to give you a hundred different amplifier models.

It's trying to give you one exceptionally musical amplifier—and then let you discover everything hiding inside it.

Four 6V6s. Five power levels. One exceptional channel. One Jensen AlNiCo 12.

Sometimes the simplest ideas produce the most inspiring amplifiers.
