Types of Microphones
Microphones are hardly one size fits all, coming in a few different types with design elements that optimize them for various applications.
- Dynamic Microphones are the simplest type, and while they're usually less sensitive than condenser mics, they can handle higher sound pressure levels which makes them popular for loud instruments like electric guitar and drums. Mics like the Shure SM57 and SM58 are great, very versatile, and budget-friendly microphones of this type and are staples of studios and venues alike.
- Condenser Microphones always require external power and function similarly to a capacitor with two charged elements. They come in two types—large diaphragm and small diaphragm—and are popular for acoustic instruments and vocals because of their ability to capture more detail and clarity with lower noise.
- Ribbon Microphones are tube-driven, featuring a thin strip of metal suspended in a magnetic field that moves with changing air pressure to produce signal. These mics often feel inherently vintage, reaching the pinnacle of their popular between the mid-'30s and '50s. They can be popular choices for recordists after a certain vintage vibe, and/or for tempering the overtones of brass instruments.
