I've been playing guitar since I was 15, "professionally" (using the term loosely) in my 20s and 30s. This included bands in bars and clubs in NYC and the ski lodges of Vermont, and a few lean years in Hollywood trying to make it as a songwriter—mostly spent recording demos with Richard Orshoff, who produced Jackson Browne's first album. I also played with a great group of guys on Maui for eight years: The Turpentine Cats. That's me on lead guitar behind Willie The Man in the circular black-and-white Reverb shop photo; the Cats opened for him—he performed his set on guitar with only his sister accompanying on piano—in a big benefit concert at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, August 1996. Then he called us up to the stage (without warning or rehearsal!) to back him for three encores. Great memory. We also opened for the Kingston Trio twice and the group America once. Riding the, uh, "wave," so to speak, of the Willie Nelson concert, the Cats recorded our one and only CD that same year: "Smokin'"

These days it's mostly just for fun with friends and home recording, since my main creative pursuit is writing novels—check out RogerDubin.com if you're interested—so I keep the gear line-up lean, which in turn keeps my wife peaceful on the subject.
