Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro 1981
Condition: Good
Vintage Collector's Item
This is the pedal that started a revolution: a genuine 1981 Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro, one of the most iconic and collectible overdrive pedals ever made. The original TS-808 was introduced in 1979 and manufactured in Japan by Maxon for Ibanez, and its distinctive combination of smooth overdrive, compression, midrange focus, and amp-pushing capability quickly established a sound that guitarists would chase for decades. Produced only during the original Tube Screamer era before the transition to the TS9, an authentic 1981 TS-808 is far more than a vintage effects pedal—it is a bona fide collector's item and an important piece of electric-guitar history.
The brilliance of the TS-808 is its ability to work with an amplifier rather than simply overwhelm it with distortion. Its relatively moderate gain, carefully shaped low end, pronounced midrange, and smooth clipping can tighten up a guitar signal, push a tube amp into natural breakup, and add sustain and definition while allowing the player's touch to remain part of the sound. That formula became one of the most influential overdrive designs ever created. Maxon's OD-808 came from the same original lineage, Ibanez followed with the TS9, and generations of manufacturers have built their own interpretations of the Tube Screamer concept. Pedals such as the Boss SD-1, Digitech Bad Monkey, Electro-Harmonix East River Drive, and JHS Bonsai all occupy territory influenced by or closely related to the Tube Screamer sound and approach. Even Ibanez acknowledges that the TS-808's smooth, full tone has been copied countless times.
The Tube Screamer's place in guitar history is further cemented by its association with legendary players. Stevie Ray Vaughan is the name most famously connected to the circuit, and although detailed research shows that his original TS-808 use was relatively brief in late 1981 and early 1982, his later TS9 use helped make the Tube Screamer sound inseparable from his legendary tone. The broader Tube Screamer family has also been embraced by players including Eric Johnson, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, Buddy Guy, Rory Gallagher, Adrian Smith, George Lynch, Andy Timmons, Kirk Hammett, Michael Schenker, Gary Clark Jr., and countless other guitarists who have relied on its ability to push an amplifier and make a guitar sit perfectly in a mix. From blues and classic rock to metal, alternative, and modern instrumental guitar, the Tube Screamer has proven remarkably adaptable.
A genuine 1981 TS-808 represents the original Japanese Tube Screamer in its classic form, from the era that established one of the most copied guitar effects circuits in history. For a player, it's a legendary tone machine; for a gear enthusiast, it's a piece of the story; and for a collector, it's a legitimate vintage pedal with historical significance that modern reproductions simply can't duplicate. Original TS-808s from this era don't turn up every day, and opportunities to add one to a serious vintage pedal collection are becoming harder to ignore. If you've been looking for the real thing, grab this one while you can.
*As shown in the pictures, the item has finish issues throughout. This Tube Screamer has been tested and functions as expected. It obviously looks a little rough cosmetically, but it works fine.*
