Back in 2018, Reverb’s Tibor spent two nights at the Chicago Theatre working with Bob Weir and Wolf Bros. Weir had just gotten a Boss GT-1000 and needed some help getting it set up. In the process, he showed Tibor a deceptively simple trick—one that’s stuck with him ever since.
Weir called it "Swampy." Essentially, it’s a super-fast slapback delay with a single repeat, dialed in so tightly that you stop hearing it as a delay at all. Instead, the repeat subtly doubles and fattens the dry signal, adding the kind of depth you may not notice until you turn it off.
There’s no precise setting to copy. As Tibor remembers it, he and Weir simply moved the delay time around until Bob heard what he wanted: "Yep, that’s Swampy." In the video above, Tibor recreates that process with a Boss DM-2W, then tries the same trick with a digital DD-8 to show how the character of the delay changes the result.
