Shop Spotlight: Epica Music Store in Rome, Italy

Today we’re headed to Italy for a visit to a shop that’s been a touchstone for vintage pedals and used gear since 2011. For gear lovers in Italy, Epica Music Store is much more than just a store, and who better to show us around than the keeper of the keys? Check out our interview below for a glimpse into this shop located in the heart of Rome.

Could you give us a short introduction to your shop? Where are you located? What kind of gear can buyers find there?

We are located in Rome, Italy, and our second store just opened a few weeks ago. We are happy to offer our customers the best gear we can find, picks, all kind of pedals, amplifiers, slides and lots of gadgets. A real heaven for any musician!

Epica offers several vintage and boutique effect pedals, but also plenty of guitars and amps. Could you tell us a bit more about how your shop got started?

Our shop started as a challenge, a way to transform our passion into a real job. My business partner (and childhood friend) and I were, and probably still are, affected by Gear Aquisition Syndrome, and used to spent every night on the computer looking for new pedals on many online forums, discussing and arguing with people about this or that distortion pedal.

Girls were not on our radar. Something had to change, so we decided to put our expertise and experience to work and we opened our first shop.

What is a can’t-miss effect pedal in your shop, and why?

Well, that's a hard question, it would be like picking and choosing a friend or a relative, so that's really hard, but I'd say a 70s Big Muff Ram's Head.

Do you have a vintage guitar that you’re particularly fond of? Why?

I'm personally very fond of any pre-CBS Fender. I don't only love their sound, but also their history and the importance they had in the music business. But of course, in our shop, you'll be able to find any brand!

You’ve been using Reverb for a while now. Could you share a bit about what that’s brought for your business? Are you reaching new customers?

Reverb totally changed our business. From a small reality in Italy all of a sudden we were selling and shipping worldwide, reaching people and countries we almost never heard of! Reverb literally changed our life, and we are so glad to be part of this family.

You also offer other services in your shop. Could you tell us a bit more about those?

Our shop also has a wonderful luthier who builds, checks and repairs any guitar or bass guitar. Our customers can come to his workshop, located in our shop, and talk to him directly. He also checks any instrument we sell, so the client knows the product he is buying is in perfect conditions.

As far as vintage Italian gear, do you have any favorite brands?

I love the vintage Vox Wah-Wahs, that were manufactured in Italy by Jen, in the city of Pescara. A historic English brand combined with Italian engineering; a perfect combination.

Any up-and-coming “boutique” Italian brands to watch?

I would keep an eye on a couple of new Italian brands. First of all NGR by Francesco De Nigris. He makes wonderful pedals and definitely has a bright future ahead of him. We sell a lot of his pedals. Another amazing brand is Costalab. His products are amazing and they are a perfect example of Made in Italy excellence.
