Moog Gets Modular with the Mother-32 Desktop Synth

Moog has taken its long awaited first step into the Eurorack format with the announcement of the Mother-32 tabletop synth. A complete monophonic synth voice in a single unit, the Mother-32 pairs an oscillator, featuring pulse and saw wave outputs, with the classic Moog ladder filter, switchable between low- and high-pass modes, to form the core of its sound. An onboard 32-step sequencer with 64 sequence memory slots, versatile LFO, two voltage controlled mixers and a white noise generator round out the Mother-32’s impressive sound design capabilities.

Most enticing though is the inclusion of a MIDI input with MIDI-to-CV conversion and a 32-point patch bay for routing and modulating parameters. This allows not only for flexible semi-modular operation within the unit itself, but integration with everything from modern DAW workstations to full-fledged modular rigs. In the spirit of that integration, Moog also is offering a new extruded aluminum 60 HP Eurorack case with wood paneling that matches the Mother-32’s size and looks. Two and three tier stands for stacking racks are on tap as well, making the Mother-32 system an attractive option for those looking to explore the modular format more deeply.

The prospect of Moog bringing its vintage modular pedigree to bear on the exploding Eurorack market has had tongues wagging in the synthesizer community for years. Making the Mother-32 a complete voice positions it as a perfect entry point for Eurorack neophytes and as an affordable option for experienced enthusiasts who want to incorporate the inimitable Moog sound into their rigs. Additionally, it can serve as an excellent bridge between modern synths or computers and vintage or modular gear. Its robust onboard sequencer even allows it to operate as a capable centerpiece for your synth setup. With that broad appeal and an unprecedented price point for Moog, the Mother-32 is poised to be extremely popular.
