Drum Tricks with Makaya McCraven: Layering The Backbeat

Makaya McCraven is back to teach us more drum tricks! For those who don't know, McCraven is a drummer and producer currently based out of Chicago. He draws from a huge range of genres and inspirations to inform his drumming, and as such has become one of the most sought-out drummers in the Chicagoland area. After his first Drum Tricks video, in which he covers linear drumming techniques, Makaya has returned to show us a little bit about building a backbeat and then spicing it up.

According to McCraven, fills come second - the most imperative part of drumming is being the backbone of your band. First, you have to create your backbeat and then layer it up with various techniques to make it more interesting. To drive your beat and move the music forward, you can use moves like incorporating a flam, doubling your snare or kick, playing in unison with both hands, and more. Watch the video to learn more tricks and exercises to perfect your newfound skills, or click below if you missed the first Drum Tricks installment.
