Allison Miller is back at Reverb to teach us more of her legendary drum tricks. Today, she's here to talk about her concept of 4+1. Or, how to play 5-note clusters over 4/4 time. Her concept is simple: play your standard paradiddle with an added note on the end. She suggests keeping time by playing along with a 4/4 metronome and playing with a 4/4 foot pattern until you get used to it. Once you're confident, speed it up, move it around your kit, and you'll have a spiced up 4/4 funk groove.
Those are just the bare bones of what you need to get going, so give the above video watch or two to see Allison demonstrate and explain all of her cool techniques and how to apply them to your music.
