About this listing
Gibson J-200 (1968) Tobacco SunburstFull package. Completely original finish and hardware with marigold '60s Ess & Ess case and dealer hangtags. Here comes the sun ☀️A true vintage stunner. A twin to the Beatles’ guitar famously used on the White Album and Abbey Road. This late 1968 J-200 left the Kalamazoo factory right at the absolute peak of the golden age of rock 'n' roll—an era defined by a musical and cultural revolution. It was built only one or two batches behind George Harrison’s first Gibson jumbo which recorded “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. It’s the definitive sound of that generation—the exact tool used profusely by John Lennon in studio and then gifted to Bob Dylan, who used it on every single track of Nashville Skyline, posed with it for the album’s cover and then brought it back for the ‘69 Isle of Wight festival with the words “Look, I’ve got George’s guitar.” Later Harrison purchased another J-200 which became the principal studio acoustic for Abbey Road.Like all super jumbos, it traces its origin to the 1937 Ray Whitley prototype. But while it shares that classic silhouette, Gibson's late-60s factory specs brought a completely different sonic and structural identity compared to those early pre-war versions. The 3 piece premium maple laminate veneer for back and sides, coupled with internal bracing and ABR-1 bridge (maligned by traditionalists, loved by contemporary rock stars – Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, the list goes on and on) all act as an advanced analogue studio, assuring quick note decay and a tightly defined sound, while retaining classic Gibson harmonics, sweetness and fullness. Unlike on older SJs that had been built to outcompete banjos and horns in a band mix, the sound never gets muddy and is instead exceptionally articulate and extremely studio-friendly.The bulky factory "Fuller tone bar" (a notorious tone-dampener on '60s J-200s) was removed before my time, completely opening up the top. It marries the best of both worlds—you get that massive classic Gibson jumbo punch combined with that laser-focused '60s mojo that tracks beautifully. The original small metal adjustment screw remains tucked up inside the bracing, and a K&K Pure Mini passive pickup is cleanly installed under the bridge plate. Stage and studio ready. The neck is thin and fast, and those beautiful Mother of Pearl graduated crown inlays on the fretboard are the absolute gold standard for Gibson flagships. The back, 2 piece bookmatched flamed maple must be seen to be believed. Unlike pre-war guitars despite all their magnificence, the smell is not that of a used book shop from a hundred year-old hide glue, but a lovely, vanilla-scented, faded nitro lacquer. Everything about this guitar looks incredibly modern and no single model leaving the Montana custom shop today can touch the class of a late 60s acoustic Gibson flagship from the Kalamazoo era—the factory at that time was at its historically largest floor space. On a side note, this is the last year before “Made in USA” label was introduced on all Gibson headstocks, as such designation was simply not necessary in pre-Norlin era. Guitar is stage-ready with the unbeatable and discreet Oregon made K&K Pure Mini (reversible, no permanent modifications to the guitar). The 60 year-old latches on the Brooklyn built Ess & Ess case run smoother than on my 5 year-old Gibson. Vintage collectors will appreciate. Brazilian fretboard and bridge make all the difference. All in all, a very special instrument that retains its essential vintage originality and checks all the boxes – from essentially a museum candidate, collector item, a sound investment (pun intended), an incredible time capsule but most of all, an absolutely amazing guitar.Materials & Specs:Fretboard & Mustache Bridge: High-grade Brazilian Rosewood (the undisputed holy grail of tonewoods, dark, dense, and legally unavailable on modern factory guitars)Top: Premium Sitka Spruce (tight-grained, beautifully aged, and completely opened up)Back & Sides: Striking 3-piece bookmatched Flamed Maple veneerInlays: Genuine Mother of Pearl graduated crownsFinish: Original, checking faded Nitrocellulose Lacquer (Tobacco Sunburst)Serial Number: 892135 (Stamped at the Kalamazoo factory, pre-"Made in USA" stamp)Weight: 6.0 lbs / 2.7 kg (Exceptionally lightweight and lively for a 17-inch jumbo)Nut Width: 1 9/16" / approx. 4.0 cm (Comfortably narrow and fast electric-like profile)Manufacturing Origin: USA (Kalamazoo, Michigan) Sourced by me directly out of Ohio, USA(because as collectors know, the best-preserved vintage wood always comes out of the Midwest closet climate).
