The D-68 SW was a Washburn Dreadnought with a solid spruce top (bound with maple) with rosewood back and sides, bound with maple/rosewood. It had a mahogany neck (with rosewood fingerboard inlaid with pearl dots). The bridge was ebony. The headstock has the Washburn logo inlaid in abalone into a rosewood veneer. Tuners were diecast chrome with pearloid plastic buttons. It came in natural finish only. Production started in the mid 1980s but by 1994 Washburn had stopped making this model.
This was a reasonably expensive guitar, according to the Washburn archives, the list price was $1500 for D-68S in 1993.
Please do not confuse this with the modern Washburn guitars. The range of guitars including the rare and sought after D66sw, D68SW and D72sw were hand made, all top grade solid tonewood constructed in the Yamaki factory in Japan in the late 80’s. Mine is a very clean example with a lovely Sitka Top and super East Indian rosewood back and sides. 3 piece back ( similar to Martin D35). The neck is straight with low action has a very comfortable profile. Plenty of saddle for future adjustments. Nut width is 44mm. Plays like a dream. Light playwear only. No structural issues. This guitar sounds amazing - lively, warm with rosewood overtones. Comes with a hard case.
