STAR's maple snare drums employ an unprecedented shell construction, resulting in a sound distinct from existing maple shells. This construction utilizes a 2mm thick "core ply" in the center, sandwiched between two 1.5mm thick maple plies on both the inside and outside. This combination of core ply and plywood provides exceptional strength, allowing the sound characteristics typically associated with thicker solid-ply shells to be achieved with an ultra-thin 5mm shell.
The newly designed lugs are a compact bridge type, minimizing contact with the shell. The smaller lugs reduce the overall weight of the snare drum and, by reducing the number of parts, allow the shell's inherent potential to be more open and resonant.
