The Gibson J-185 is something of a hidden gem in the acoustic world — overshadowed by its larger sibling the SJ-200, yet widely regarded by devoted Gibson players as one of the finest acoustics the company makes. Originally introduced in the early 1950s, the J-185 was designed as a slightly smaller alternative to the SJ-200, and that more focused body size turns out to be a significant advantage for a lot of players.
The result is a guitar with exceptional tonal balance across the full frequency range — lows, mids, and highs in proportion, with even response up and down the fretboard. The solid Sitka spruce top and solid flamed maple back and sides deliver clarity and projection with a natural brightness that suits fingerpicking and flatpicking equally well.
The mahogany neck has a Slim Taper profile — faster and leaner than the rounded profiles found on the SJ-200 and Hummingbird — and the rosewood fingerboard is dressed with premium mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays. The Ultra Vintage belly-up bridge, bone nut and saddle, and Gotoh Keystone tuners round out a spec list that leans firmly vintage in all the right ways.
Electronics are the L.R. Baggs VTC — passive, transparent, and natural-sounding plugged in.
