Today for your bass-slapping consideration I have this beautiful 2021 Yamaha TRBJP2 John Patitucci Signature 6-String Bass in the striking, less common Transparent Dark Red gloss polyurethane finish. This particular example, in excellent condition, comes to me from clear across the Atlantic Ocean, as a close friend of mine won this bass from the popular YouTube channel Scott's Bass Lessons - headquartered in Leeds, United Kingdom.
The made-in-Japan TRBJP2 was designed in close collaboration with John Patitucci. He specified nearly everything on this model including the maple/ash/alder/maple laminated body construction, the custom side-by-side double-coil alnico pickups, the active preamp's EQ frequencies, and even the D'Addario EXL170-6SL / 0.032-0.130 Super Longs.
This TRBJP2, weighing in at a rather svelte (for this model) 10 lb. 12.4 oz., features a 3-piece maple neck supporting an ebony fingerboard outfitted with 26 medium-jumbo frets. The neck is 56 mm or 2.2 in. wide at the bone nut and 81.1 mm or 3.19 in. wide at the 12th fret. The neck is 21 mm or 0.83 in. thick at the 1st fret and 23.5 mm or 0.93 in. thick at the 12th fret. The fingerboard has a radius of 40 in., and the bass has an overall scale length of 35 in. This guitar has all the flat real estate even the most demanding of thump wizards could possibly ask for.
The TRBJP2 includes Gotoh GB72 tuners with eye-catching white pearloid pegheads and a solid brass bridge with 19 mm string spacing. The custom Alnico V, low-noise, side-by-side, double-coil pickups are versatile enough for general gigging while still delivering a clear tonal image when playing chords.
Sculpting tone is quick and convenient with a pickup balancer knob, master volume, and 3-band active EQ - utilizing Yamaha's own "Initial Response Acceleration" processing, giving the instrument a more played-in sound and feel. All knobs have a comfy rubbery touch and are free of scratches or pops. The pickup balancer has a very satisfying detent to let you know when you're in the proper middle, and the three EQ knobs seem to have a bit stiffer action making accidental turning unlikely when quickly adjusting the volume or pickup blend.
As you can see from the photographs, this bass has quite a bit of that gud gud active flame figuring on the top as well as the back and the headstock, and I would even go as far to say that this example is more heavily figured than any of the TRBJP2's currently in Sweetwater's Guitar Gallery.
This instrument has never been gigged and only exhibits a couple of the slightest finish imperfections and light surface level scratches one would expect to see on any promotional instrument. This bass feels and plays as if brand new, and any minor flaws I could find have been documented in the pictures to the best of my ability.
The history of this instrument is completely accounted for. My good buddy, Vinay, won this bass from the popular YouTube channel, Scott's Bass Lessons, in 2022 or 2023. Vinay is a my former college roommate and bandmate; he is a bassist, but this 6-string is more bass than he has use for, so he asked me to sell it for him. That was a few years ago, and I'm only just now getting around to listing as I had to move a couple times since then. Rest assured it has been sitting in its included factory hardshell case since it came into my possession. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Scott's Bass Lessons has since taken down the episode featuring the giveaway of this bass, so you'll have to take my word for it. Suffice to say this TRBJP2 sounds especially excellent when played with a white glove.
Since this guitar was essentially new when it came to me I didn't do anything to it beyond a good polish and a thorough testing. It feels lovely in the hands and sounds great, but this beast really needs the touch of a master groove goblin to truly come alive. Are you that goblin?
This Instrument will ship in its original factory hardshell case along with all original case candy. I’ll be sure to pack the inside of the case with bubble wrap as well as the outside to prevent any movement in transit.
I have described and documented this instrument to the best of my abilities as a single dude that lives only with his two thumbless dogs. I have obscured the serial number of this guitar in the photographs for security purposes.
If you have any questions, comments, offers, war stories, etc. please feel free to reach out. I’ll respond as soon as I can.
Stay safe out there and don’t stop playing!
Regards,
Brandon
